Tension -Headache

Tension Headaches what are they?

In our rush, rush, modern-day lifestyle, it is not unusual that we encounter one of those. For some, it is a recurring symptom on average once a week; for others, it is chronic. What am I talking about Tension Headaches! When it hit, it will ruin your day.

It can hit suddenly, or it creeps in slowly until it reaches its apotheoses. It happens at the forehead right between the temples; it may also feel like a tight band squeezing the head, or a lingering ache, dull pressure around the head especially, at the back of the head and neck or around the head. Some experiences are so severe that they are quite often mistaken for migraines. Tension headaches are more prevalent in women, and according to the Cleveland Clinic, 3% of the US population have symptoms of chronic ones.

Causes of tension headaches

As far as we know, there is no single trigger, and it is not genetic either. However, the usual culprits are:

  • Long hours at the computer
  • Not getting enough rest.
  • Long commute in traffic
  • Poor posture
  • Cold weather

Other triggers observed to cause tension headaches are stresses caused by the environment, mental concerns, emotions, including social stresses. Some sources also indicate that depression can also be a trigger.

Treatment for tension headaches

The mainstream quick fix is usually an over-the-counter medication such as Aspirin or Ibuprofen. These pills can be a day saver; consequently, they can also be overused and provoke more headaches. According to the reputable Mayo Clinic, the OTC medications can cause rebound headaches as one becomes accustomed to them. These medications are also known to cause gastric and intestinal issues. In other instances, doctors may prescribe a painkiller in conjunction with muscle relaxants. Those are effective remedies but not without side effects and other complications.

Some none drugs alternative treatments available are:

  • Biofeedback, where you learn a relaxation technique to manage pain and stress
  • Stress Management, where you learn strategies to cope with stress and relieve tension
  • Acupuncture, where needles are inserted at specific meridians of the body to relieve tensions and stress

Energy healing for Tension Headaches

Those therapies are very potent; nevertheless, some require time and dedication to master.

Alternatively, there is one that I recommend to my clients. It is quick, very efficient, has no cost, and is readily available anywhere at any time. The method, based on the Chinese Micro Massage. Whereby you gently massage the area of the hand right above the knuckle of the thumb. Since you have no training in micro-massage, I would recommend that you only perform this on yourself. This gentle massage promotes blood flow to the head, neck, and shoulders and helps release tension in those areas. Here is the full procedure.

  • Take about 3 to 4 full belly breaths.
  • Take your right-hand index finger and thumb and make them into the shape of an “L”.
  • Using your other hand, locate the middle of the “L”.
  • Apply moderate pressure to that spot with your other thumb and index finger. Now massage for the duration of 6 deep breaths.
  • Repeat as necessary to alleviate headaches and neck /shoulder tension.
