“Il est du véritable amour comme de l’apparition des esprits tout le monde en parle, mais peu de gens en ont vu.”- Francois de La Rochefoucauld
Translation: “True love is like ghosts, which everyone talks about and few have seen”
Imagine being at: a beach, on top of a mountain, at a lake, in your backyard, or anywhere for that matter where you have a clear view of the sky. It is almost dawn, and the sun is about to rise. You are looking to the east, and faint colors start to appear on the horizon. The sky is changing quickly. Right then, at that demarcation line, it appears… The sum. It breaks the darkness and starts its ascension. The sun is rising and starting its long journey across the sky towards the west. For the next 12 hours or so, it will lit the world below. It is magnificent.
This show of nature happens every day, and the sun rises for every being, big or small, irrelevant of whether that being has been good or bad. It will shine with the same intensity for the whole planet. In your deepest fear, your laborious journey, it is going to be there. Even during the cloudiest day, it is there just behind the dark clouds.
This -my friends- is TRUE LOVE.
True Love, or as we sometimes call it, unconditional Love, is the ability to give; love to anyone and everyone without any judgments or conditions. We equally give to those that have wrong us or do things that we disapprove of. We equally bestow the same kind of love, to the beggar as well to the rich; to the criminals, and the ones upholding the law.
Like the sun which will not hold its magnificent and warm from anyone; because some has not been worthy, compare to another one, he has done less. The sun is not going to shine brighter for someone who has given all his fortune to charity. That same sun is present for that homeless who find his dinner in the bin behind a restaurant.
True Love is being able to see any person as an aspect of the Devine having a human experience. True Love is not exclusive or inclusive. It is the same for your children or that stranger sitting on the bench at the bus stop. We fabricated false notions about love. We gave it a name, Romantic Love, Filial Love, etc. We wrote books and plays about it to allow us to pick and choose who we gave it to; True Love is to be given free to everyone without judgment or prejudice.
Are we ready to truly love?
On Valentine’s day, love is on everyone’s mind. So do we really have love in our hearts on this day, or are we looking for approval?
Are we expecting those cards, roses, chocolates, or anything that we usually receive on that day because someone we know loves us? Maybe we are the giver. Are we giving because of expectation?
Let us take a minute and reflect on the notion of True Love.
Do we love, as the sun shines for everyone, or is it a concept that we have picked from tradition, culture, media, or where ever we draw it?
Are we expecting to receive something because we were good? Or, we are not sending a card because that person did not send one last year.
Here is what I will urge you to do after reading this post. Take a deep breath, close your eyes and fill your heart with love. There is no need for direction on how to do this. We instinctively know how to do that. Then imagine being the sun high in the sky looking at your home, the earth, and send love to everything you see. In an out-breath whisper…
I love you

I really enjoyed your take on how the sun doesn’t shine brighter for one person and not another. Very powerful and thought provoking, Juan.

Thank you, that was my intent to stir up a little and make us realize that our concept of love is somewhat distorted
And I thought I was the sensible one. Thanks for setting me straight.
Is that really all there is to it because that’d be flaisergabtbng.
When I was living in Toronto I used to love getting up early and watch the sunrise from the bluffs over looking the water. I used to marvel in the beautiful colourful changing light show as well as the stillness that seem to come from it. And, I think this is like love, it is being in that moment and appreciate the beauty and the essence of all things and beings. It is to see the light of essence and truly soaking up every molecule of energy and receiving or giving of the pure joy of energy unconditionally. Thanks for a great post Juan.
So excited I found this article as it made things much quirekc!
