As years go by, certain things however do not change. I am talking about those who are so close minded or focus on their beliefs that even if the truth were to hit them over the head like a ton of bricks; they will still be able to rationalize what happened as a freak accident. I am referencing those who do not recognize that Reiki has the power to heal, and are still undermining it and other energy healing as quackery, old wife tales, hocus pocus, or plain “woo-woo”. By scouting the internet one will come across many articles and sites that negatively talks about reiki. They are from both the religious and scientific side of the spectrum. For instant at http://www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com, a Christian faith website, there is an article that describes this healing modality as “A Dangerous and Occultic Practice”. On the scientific side there is no consensus there. Scientists cite the results as either anecdotal, placebos effect or not enough empirical data to determine the healing benefit of this art.

On the other hand on the site of the University of Minnesota in an article title “What Does the Research Say about Reiki?” expert Contributor, Pamela Miles came to this conclusion:

What is the status of the research?

While the debate on how best to study integrative therapies such as Reiki is main steam, research attempts have been and continue to be made. Nonetheless, research into Reiki is just beginning. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has completed five studies looking at Reiki’s ability to benefit people with diabetes, advanced AIDS, prostate cancer, fibromyalgia, and stress. Other published studies have looked at the effect of Reiki on measures of stress hormones, blood pressure, heart rate, and immune responsivity, and on subjective reports of anxiety, pain and depression. The studies to date are typically small, and not every study is well designed. However, overlapping data from some of the stronger studies support the ability of Reiki to reduce anxiety and pain, and suggest its usefulness to induce relaxation, improve fatigue and depressive symptoms, and strengthen overall wellbeing. The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews contains a review on the use of touch therapies (including Reiki) for pain and a protocol for use of Reiki for psychological symptoms.

Reiki has been increasingly offered as part of workplace wellness programs to address burnout and improve skills in healthcare and other industries, as well as in university wellness centers.

Article like these are excellent however what really will make a difference is the real life example of what result people are experiencing and practical application of Reiki in their healing journey. When Lynn Ballas was wheeled into Columbia University Medical Center’s operating room in late 2012 to undergo double mastectomy surgery and remove the cancerous cells in her breasts, the usual suspects bustled around her: a surgeon, an anesthesiologist, and a team of nurses. But there was an additional key member of her surgical team: a Reiki master.

Ballas hired Reiki practitioner Raven Keyes to be in the room with her that day, channeling loving energy as the surgery team cut Ballas open and sewed her back up. She had received Reiki a few times before and always enjoyed it but had never considered having energy work in a medical setting. It wasn’t until she noticed Keyes’ book The Healing Power of Reiki sitting in a pile of books and papers in her doctor’s office that the topic came up. Her physician, Sheldon Marc Feldman, M.D., offered Reiki as an add-on option to her surgery. “I’ve never been a high-energy person,” Ballas says. “I get drained very easily, and I thought I would need an extra boost.”

To me this is the kind of article that make a difference as it shows real application of Reiki and its beneficial healing power in real life situation.

Reiki in the News

Hitting the newsstands in February 2016 was the Newsweek special edition entitle Spiritual Living, The Secret to Peace and Happiness. In that edition, there was an article entitled The Healing Power of Reiki written by Trevor Courneen. In that article, the author explores the power of Reiki. Trevor Courneen uses testimonials from the website of the International Center for Reiki Healing as anecdotal proof of the healing power of this art. 

Reiki Master William Lee Rand humbly explains, “You don’t study to learn how to use Reiki—it’s a gift.”

The article highlights the journey of this great master. How during his two-decade of practicing Reiki, he has established the International Center for Reiki Healing as a recognized organization for practitioners in the United States.

The publication of an article about energy healing in such a prestigious mainstream publication is a big step toward recognizing Reiki as a healing art. Reports like this, bringing more awareness to Reiki and other Energy Healing modalities.

The future of Energy Healing looks brighter.

I hope to see more of these headlines about Energy Healing more often in the future. They will create greater awareness of Reiki and other Energy Healing modalities to the general public. Such news will Let them know of alternatives that, either by themselves or in conjunction with conventional treatments, will help them regain their health faster.

Most literature and information found on the internet classifies Reiki as a healing modality. However, from my perspective, Reiki is more than that. It is also a spiritual practice that promotes self-awareness and elevation of consciousness. Reiki is a modality that causes true healing as it works at the deepest level of the spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical. Reiki is the emanation of the purest form of Source Energy at our dimension and reality.

The misnomer

Part of the jargon is to say “doing Reiki” than in itself is a misnomer. The true essence of Reiki is nothing is ever done. It happens. A True Reiki practitioner will not try to control or influence Reiki. The energy is intelligent. It does what is necessary for the highest good of the person receiving it. In its pure form, a practitioner trusts that Source, creator of all, knows better than his egoistic self. The intention is set by the receiver, as this makes them more open to received, and most of the time, the outcome is as expected and more. However, sometimes nothing seems to happen at a physical level. But the life force energy is working at a more subtle and deeper level where things need to be addressed first before materializing into the physical reality. That is why we do not diagnose conditions, and we do not resolve or eliminate symptoms. We do not wish or try to control an outcome but leave ourselves open to the infinite possibilities that only True Source can deliver. Therefore we really cannot use Reiki to find a new well-paid job. On the other hand, it can raise our vibration so that we are in resonance with that job, and we can attack it if that is in our best interest at that time.

Base on what we see on the internet, it appears that there is a specific Reiki system for any situation under the sun. Let me tell you! Those are not Reiki. There is no such thing as a given Reiki energy that will specifically attract a soul mate, love, money, or anything else in that matter. If a practitioner can promise a specific outcome, then that person is not practicing Reiki. As there is only one True Reiki energy, and we cannot manipulate it. Be warned when someone promises a specific result with Reiki. They are either lying or practicing some other modality under the guise of Reiki.

When Usui Sensei became aware of Reiki, he formulated a simple system to teach others how to connect to that energy and because it is of the divine, he did not impose on a rigid structure. As such, others who wanted to teach that modality started to add symbols. I believe, in the beginning, it was for differentiation only, then as time goes by, the ego gets involved. More symbols were added, this time for a specific outcome. Now, there are systems out there with dozen of symbols and hybrid with other modalities. This situation makes it so confusing to both students and clients who need to make a choice. It also leaves the field open to charlatans and unscrupulous people to take advantage of the not well-informed public. A system indeed needs to evolve as mass consciousness elevates itself, but the question is: Can we amplify the energy of creation? NO!

Back to basic

To make things even, worse there are now people who claim they can perform a psychic attack on others using Reiki. That in itself is outrageous, as Reiki is an energy that will not harm. So how to discern True from pseudo-Reiki? Once again, True Reiki is from the universe, and it is not under our control. So let’s go back to the philosophy of the founder. Be aligned and surrendered ourselves to the infinite, omnipotent Source. Stay connected and develop an awareness of our true identity as extensions of the divine, and let the divinity come through us. Let us not fall for fear, manipulation, and personal power.

True Reiki is simple, do not do harm and support the whole person.
