What is Reiki?

What is Reiki

Noun: Reiki – rei·ki /ˈrākē/  noun

Reiki

A healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) describes Reiki as a complementary and alternative medicine practice that uses putative (yet to be measured) energy fields, or biofields, to affect health. The consensus in the field of Energy Biofield Therapies states that it “generally reflects the concept that human beings are infused with subtle forms of energy,” which in theory surround and pass through the human form or any living organism for that matter. Reiki, along with its new western cousins in Energy therapies, such as therapeutic touch and Healing Touch, operates with the belief that they can balance these subtle energy fields.

Use of Reiki

People use Reiki to help with almost any illness. The most common use is: to relax and strengthen their wellbeing; reduce pain, anxiety, and fatigue. They also use this energy healing modality to help manages symptoms; reduce side effects of medications; and support recovery after injuries or surgery. In 2006, 1.2 million adults and 161,000 children received one, or several, sessions of an energy healing therapy such as Reiki. This data comes from a 2007 national survey. I believe that people are reluctant to use Reiki in the USA because of the lack of research to support it. However, there is enough evidence that shows Reiki helps with stress and pain management. It also promotes relaxation (Bowden, Goddard, & Gruzelier, 2010; Olson, Hanson, & Michaud, 2003).

Is Reiki safe

There is one thing that all experts agreed on is that Reiki is very safe and does not have any adverse effects. Nothing in a Reiki session will interfere with any conventional medical care and will compliment any conventional therapy. We can use Reiki even if the receiver has uncomfortable body pain. The touch during a session is very light or can even be off the body. There is no risk of adverse reaction or counter-reaction with prescription medications since there is nothing to ingest.

Reiki will not nullify the action of any medical procedure but rather support the patient during that process. It will help to restore balance in the body, mind, and spirit to accelerate healing. Patients with fewer side effects when fighting chronic illness are more likely to see through their medical treatment to the end.

You can be a more active partner in your health care when you incorporate Reiki into your life, even if the medical prognostic is not very bright.

  1. The nice thing about Reiki is the only side effects are positive growth and expansion. I hope your sessions go well Juan. If I was in your neck of the woods I would drop by for sure. “A healer’s power stems not from any special ability, but from maintaining the courage and awareness to embody and express the universal healing power that every human being naturally possesses.”
