Reiki Symbols

Reiki Symbol

For decades Reiki Masters have considered the Reiki symbols as holy and persisted in the old Reiki tradition of keeping them secret. According to tradition, the Reiki symbols should only be available to those who have received Reiki level 2 attunement. With the advent of the internet, those symbols are readily available to anyone with an internet connection. So the question is, can anyone who can access information about these symbols can practice Reiki?

Reiki symbols have no power by themselves.

We now know that the Reiki symbols, and the relevant information about them, are of no value by themselves. During multiple tests, individuals with no Reiki experience and some even with psychic abilities were given the symbols to memorize and then asked to perform Reiki. None of them succeeded. However, in a control group with students attuned to Reiki, they were able to perform Reiki. From those experiments, we can conclude that the attunements are responsible to unlock the Reiki Energy in the symbols.

Reiki Symbols as keys

We can compare the Reiki symbols to keys that open the doors to higher consciousness. The way I perceive the Reiki symbols is like push-button triggers that instantly give access to the energy. Since those symbols have been used for years, and by thousands, they have established a resonance in the field. It allows us and makes an instant connection to the universal life force when invoked. During an attunement, the students have their energy field calibrated to the symbol, which gives them better access to the energy source. Each symbol represents a different vibration that is accessed when invoked. So when the practitioner draws or visualizes a symbol, he is entrained to that particular energy.

The three original Reiki symbols

Reiki has evolved a lot since the days of Usui sensei. There are now many schools and forms of Reiki, and some have added their own symbols to the originals. However, in the true Usui Reiki tradition, there are only three symbols. Students were given those three symbols during the Reiki 2 Attunement. The symbols are the Power symbol (Choku Rei), the Mental/Emotional symbol (Sei He Ki), and the Distance symbol (Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen).

The form of the symbols

Having its origin in Japan, Reiki symbols are from the Japanese pictograph, Kanji, which has very exact writing strokes. Strict adherence to the form is required, and the students learn the proper way of writing them before they graduate to Reiki 2. However, slight variation is bound to appear mostly among occidental. This non-uniformity should not be a concern as Reiki symbols given to a student will work because of the intention and the association to the life force energies it represents.

  1. Great post. I was taught how to do Reiki and when I was living in Canada I used to practice Reiki a lot and had many sessions on me as well. It is amazing how we can share our energy and truly heal others whether they are in front of you or far away.
